Hexies on my table

Hey, everybody!  I finished my EPP Hexies!

Hmmm, but what IS it, you say?

My new table topper, of course!  :)  
When I take the middle sections out of my kitchen table, it is a circle.  I think this new hexie shaped table topper will work great with the round table.



Once all my EPP hexies were sewn together, I wasn't sure how to finish them off into a useable object.  Finally, I decided to applique the hexies onto this piece of Kona in a forgotten color.  I didn't want to bind, so I layered batting, then more Kona for the backing, and then the upside down top.  Stitch around the edge, leave a turning opening, turn, and hey-presto!  no need to bind :)





I quilted hexie rings radiating out from the center, and I love how the back looks:



Do you see that little bit of a stitching line in the upper left hand corner?  When I removed all the basting stitches and papers from the hexies, I accidentally left one paper in and didn't notice until it was appliqued down and the layers were sewn together, so I had to rip up the stitches and sew it back down again.

get stitched

Two summers ago, I carried these hexies around everywhere I went.  I loved stitching in beautiful, happy places.  I loved the freedom of a go-anywhere project, and I loved the Hexies. 

But once they were stitched together, I didn't know how to finish them into something useful.  Uncertainty caused me to let them sit in the figurative WIP pile {I don't actually keep all my WIPs together, I prefer to be in denial about how many there are}



... until recently, when I decided to just jump in and give it a go.  I'm nearly done now, and I can't wait to show you the finished project :)

 

One of these things is not like the other...

One of these things just isn't the same.

Do you remember that song from Sesame Street?  I think of it every time I look at this picture:

Please pardon my wrinkles, these little hexies have done a lot of traveling! 

I've sewn on them at the lake, in the car, watching tv, at church, & at the park during the summer concert series. 

{I'm already missing summer evenings of good music and good stitching in my lawn chair while the boys play on the playground...}

Anywho...

This is as big as my hexies are gonna get, the plan is to make a table topper from them.  Since my kitchen table is round in it's smallest form, I think the hexagon shape will complement it nicely.

All of the hexies in the outer ring are attached by at least one side, now I'm going around and sewing the other sides.  I'm doing it that way to help avoid sewing oopsies while listening to concerts...

I just have one teensy tiny problem - I have no idea how to finish this.  I'd like to keep all the nice pointy edges of the hexagons, but I'm not sure how to back/baste/quilt&bind my EPP.  could you help me out?  Any suggestions would be very much appreciated :)

In other news, I got a new nail polish color.  It's called Beach.  I love it :)

hexing along

my hexies are coming along nicely, if I do say so myself!  :)

I wanted to sew 2 inch hexagons but I'm too cheap frugal to buy precut shapes, so I looked around the internet for something free.  I didn't find what I wanted, so I opened up one of my quilting books.  {hey, here is a wild idea - how about I use some of those books that are hanging around? hehe}
I found various hexagons, none of which seemed to be the usual sizes {?} and settled on one that is somewhere between an inch and three quarters and two inches.

{Oh, and I can walk again. Which makes me very happy}

chocolate chip cookies, hexies, and the delayed toad effect

I grew up with an older brother.  He did all the usual older brother stuff, including daring me to kiss a toad & then gleefully announcing I was going to get warts.  Let me tell you, I was some relieved when that didn't happen.

What I didn't know then was apparently the toads have a delayed effect, which I'm just now experiencing.  On the bottoms of my feet.  The treatment for which is very very painful.

Since walking is laughably out of the question, I've been spending a lot of time on the couch watching tv with a stack of chocolate chip cookies, a glass of milk, and some fabric to comfort me.  :)
These fabrics, in fact:

The orange dot is DS for Joann's.  The rest are fat quarters that came in a bundle, and not all of them have selvedge edges, but I think there is some It's a Hoot by Momo, AMH innocent crush, and the coffee beans & cups are metro cafe.

But there is one fabric I'd know from a mile away, one I've been hunting for.  Can you see it tucked in there with the rest, looking inconspicuous & all?

And yes, I did buy a whole stack of FQs just to get it.  It was totally worth it :)
I have big plans for that PHG, so I set it aside, but the rest have become EPP hexies!

this is my first foray into hexies, and I'm really enjoying it :)
I plan on bringing my hexies to a few parties to show them off, and I'll update this post when I do.
OK, one more reason I love blogland - you can attend some great parties without getting up off the couch and leaving your cookies behind :)  {and birthday cake.  did I mention there is a ton of birthday cake around here?}
